Recruitment time! Oh the fun life of a GM, not!
Oh it’s that time again, it’s time for recruiting to fill teams for a brand new expansion coming in, when is that again? Oh yeah. no one fucking knows!
So, I’m back from summer holidays and in game again, yay?
I went from this:
To the below. I’m back in the world of warcraft, starting again on recruitment for our empty spots in our hardcore team for MoP. Spamming trade, wow forums, oh my! Yet this always happens over and over.
I’m standing in Orgrimmar. I spam my macro:
Then this really DK sends me tells. Here’s a copy of what transpired in the conversation.
Note: the punctuation and spelling is an exact replica.
RandomDK:Â “can i get a inv off you?”
Me:Â “No you can’t get an invite. Are you the best of the best? Then apply on the website and prove it”
RandomDK:” ok ifff i apply know would i be able to get a answar today?”
Me: “Do you think a hardcore guild is going to give you an answer today? Do you meet the raider requirements in terms of experience, etc.”
RandomDK: “i dont know tbh. i dont want to be waiting to to long to get into a guild”
Me: “Ok, what sort of progression have you had in previous tiers?”
RandomDK: “wht u mean”
Me: “Sweetie if you don’t know what tiers are how can you be in a top tier raiding guild?”
<no response anymore>
le sigh. Always the same. This happens so many times, do these people just seek me out or what?
I really need a recruitment officer, I just don’t have the patience for this at all. How are you guys/gals handling recruitment in the pre-expansion for the expansion?

I remember recruiting once in Wrath, someone actually whisped me asking me to link acheive’s before I could invite him….
Using multiple approaches really. We’re trying to funnel people to the site. Mostly hitting up the major recruiting sites: WoWlemmings (WoW forums), MMO Champion, Enjin, and other communities. But we’re also targeting specific players. Anyone that matches who we’re looking for, we zero in on them and make a pitch.
So really, it’s a combination of going to people and encouraging people to come to us. If we like someone, we’d rather make a move first in order to put us on their radar.
Think about it. How would you feel if you were specifically head hunted by a guild? I’d probably be a little warm, fuzzy, and (maybe) flattered ^^.
trade chat & general chat usually don’t give me the best recruits. Other recruitment tools end up being a lot better.

We only need like 3 more people for a full 10 man, but just one more to make it a “guild run”. However, whilst spaming trade with a variation of “the dark Within – a newly formed guild (2) blah blah blah.
I keep getting asked what our progression is and then abused for not being able to say heroics etc. We cleared DS in our old guild, but technically TDW has no progression. So I tell them that. I do say newly formed guild…wouldn’t that sort of answer the progression question?
I switched the tables once and said – seriously we are looking towards MoP now, who cares what progression a new guild has right now – his response “my hunter needs gear from DS – good luck with your “guild”.
Recruiting sucks overall because the majority of people want a free ride and the good ones are generally already in other guilds and not willing to leave for potentially not greener pastures…

Oh how I feel your pain! We’re basically using the same strategy as Matticus. You still end up with some… less than ideal applicants, but tend to have higher quality.
I don’t want to sound argumentative or anything like that, but i’m a little confused by your approach here.
If you’re just going to funnel people directly to the website, why tell them to /w you in the first place? I mean, it seems like most people who would be SERIOUS would go to the website to begin with. I’m assuming 99% of the usual questions you would get in a whisper are answered there as well. Plus, it’s a simple “can you follow directions” test for anybody. “I said go to the website, not whisper me.”
I dunno, maybe i’m a bit jaded from trying to do recruiting before, but that just seemed a bit confusing to me. Not trying to start shit or be a jerk I promise :3
